Leonardo DiCaprio makes his trip to Russia after avoiding plane crash
Leonardo DiCaprio hasn’t developed a fear of flying! The actor was involved in a mid-air scare when the plane he was flying on was forced to make an emergency landing on Sunday.
DiCaprio was on a commercial flight to Moscow, Russia, when one of the aircraft’s engines shut down, forcing the plane to return to JFK International Airport in New York City.
But the star, 36, still made the trip to St. Petersberg, Russia for the World Wildlife Fund’s Tiger Summit, a four-day meeting to discuss ways to prevent the extinction of the animals.
After arriving at the summit, which was hosted by Russian Prime Minister Vladmir Putin, DiCaprio donated $1 million to the WWF to support antipoaching efforts and protect critical tiger forests.
“Illegal poaching of tigers for their parts and massive habitat loss due to palm oil, timber and paper production are driving this species to extinction,” the Oscar winner explains. “If we don’t take action now, one of the most iconic animals on our planet could be gone in just a few decades.”
Leo — who’s currently dating Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli — recently admitted he takes himself “too seriously”.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do next,” he said. “I have no idea and it’s kind of a cool place to be.
“For the rest of the year I’ll be really taking care of myself because I’ve reached 35 and I’ve taken a lot of things seriously, maybe too seriously at times, so I’m going to make sure that whatever I do next and whatever choices I make are really right for me. And we’ll see where that takes me.”
