Paul Hardcastle: History keeps repeating

Paul Hardcastle has claimed that the history of the Vietnam war is repeating itself with the current conflict in Afghanistan. The songwriter’s new single “19: Boys To War” – a follow-up to his 1985 hit “19” – draws explicit parallels between the two wars.

Hardcastle told Metro: “I think “19” was successful because it was so different and it didn’t try to disguise its meaning; its message was smashed in your face. 25 years ago, Vietnam seemed like a foreign war, a decade old, nowhere near my friends and family. But like it says in the new version, history keeps repeating itself. There’s a parallel between Vietnam and Afghanistan. I looked around and thought, ‘This is basically happening again’.”

He added: “Our involvement has taken over from this just being a record. I am not taking sides but if it makes just one young person rethink going to war, then job done. Celebrity gets more news coverage than kids dying but music can keep their memories alive and that’s a big motivating force. I wish I hadn’t had to make this kind of record. I won’t ever come back to “19” again but the people this affects are always going to be remembered. That’s my parting shot.”
