Emeli Sande Details New LP ‘Long Live the Angels’
OHMYGOSSIP — Scottish soul-pop singer Emeli Sandé detailed her sophomore LP on Friday, revealing that Long Live the Angels will arrive November 11th. “This entire album is about me not holding back and not censoring myself,” the singer said in a statement.
Sandé accompanied news of the album with the storming new song “Hurts,” pairing relentless handclaps with pained, imperious vocals. The singer wrote and produced the track with Mac & Phil. “Hurts” takes an everything-but-the-kitchen sink, James Bond theme song approach to eliciting emotion, utilizing sweeping strings, a towering brass section and a choir. “‘Hurts’ is an explosion,” the singer noted. “It’s just … real talk.”
Sandé released her debut album, Our Version of Events, in 2012 and suggested that she struggled to deal with its success. “Sounds a bit dramatic, but I just wanted to disappear,” she explained. “I just had this overwhelming sensation and realization everything had to stop. And then slowly it did.”
She maintained her side career as a songwriter during this period — helping Katy Perry with “It Takes Two,” Mary J. Blige with “Whole Damn Year” and Gorgon City with “Imagination.” Now she’s ready to step back into the lead singer role. “I’m proud of my first album and thankful for the experiences it gave me,” she wrote. “But I’m so much happier with my new album and with where I am in life.”
Sandé has scored some high-powered fans. After announcing the impending release of “Hurts” on Twitter, Perry declared, “I am ready to lose it and then recover!!! Bring the truth!”
