Prince William given new royal role

OHMYGOSSIP — Britain’s Prince William has been made a personal aide-de-camp (ADC) to Queen Elizabeth, a symbolic role that signifies his frowing role in the royal family.

Britain’s Prince William has been made a personal aide-de-camp (ADC) to Queen Elizabeth.

The royal’s honorary appointment was announced in the Court Circular yesterday (17.03.13) and he wore the insignia for the first time at the St Patrick’s Day parade for the 1st Battalion Irish Guards at Mons Barracks in Aldershot, Hampshire, South England.

The appointment – which came in a week where the queen cancelled many public engagements due to ill health – has few official duties but the largely symbolic role will be seen as a nod to William’s growing position within the royal family.

William’s father, Prince Charles is also a personal ADC to the monarch, while his grandfather, Queen Elizabeth’s husband Prince Philip was given the position by the queen’s father King George VI.

The role includes duties such as representing the queen at memorial services or attending on the monarch at the state opening of parliament.

Some ADCs are also chosen from the armed services but are rarely asked to perform any duties.

As well as the new role, William – whose official title is the Duke of Cambridge – is also a Royal Knight of the Order of the Thistle and a Knight of the Garter.

Queen Victoria was the first monarch to appoint personal ADC positions.
