Nicole Kidman says she was banned from attending a meeting for bereaved parents — because she wasn’t one of them.

The Oscar-winning actress — who raises two daughter with husband Keith Urban and two adopted children with ex-husband Tom Cruise – wanted to attend the group sessions for grieving parents as part of her preparation for her part in Rabbit Hole, where she plays a mother struggling to deal with the death of her six-year-old son.

“I actually tried to go to a grief group and they said, ‘No, you can’t come because you can’t have someone in the group that hasn’t been through exactly the same thing – the emotions are too raw’, which I totally respected,” she said.

Nicole says she wasn’t afraid to take on the challenge of the role.

“It’s the place you most fear to tread, particularly as a parent, a mother, it’s the most terrifying place to go and exist but at the same time it’s the most important,” she said.

“The loss of a child is the most terrifying place for me to go but that’s where I tend to go creatively – places that terrify me.

“Life can be very beautiful, but there’s the other end of the spectrum when it can be so painful. I wanted to honor that for people. It’s not explored that often and for me it needs to be.”

Kidman — who welcomed Faith Margaret, her second child with Urban — recently admitted she suffered agonizing times when trying to conceive.

“Anyone that’s been in the place of wanting another child or wanting a child knows the disappointment, the pain and the loss that you go through trying and struggling with fertility,” she said.

“Fertility is such a big thing, and it’s not something I’ve ever run away from talking about.”
