The King’s Speech triumphs at BAFTAs

The King’s Speech has dominated the 2011 BAFTAs, taking home seven awards at ceremony in London.

The royal drama, which centres on King George VI and his relationship with speech therapist Lionel Logue, secured wins for ‘Best Film’, ‘Best British Film’, ‘Best Original Screenplay’ and acting prizes for stars Colin Firth (‘Best Actor’), Geoffrey Rush (‘Best Supporting Actor’) and Helena Bonham Carter (‘Best Supporting Actress’).

Natalie Portman followed up her Golden Globes victory by taking home the ‘Best Actress’ prize for her role as a psychologically unhinged ballerina in Black Swan.

The ‘Best Director’ prize went to The Social Network’s David Fincher, while Chris Morris‘s Four Lions won ‘Outstanding Debut By A British Writer, Director Or Producer’.

The Social Network writer Aaron Sorkin won ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’, Toy Story 3 scooped ‘Best Animated Film’ and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was awarded ‘Film Not In The English Language’.

Elsewhere, the Harry Potter series received ‘Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema’ and Sir Christopher Lee accepted the ‘Academy Fellowship’.
