Joseph Kosinski says Tron 3 script is nearly complete

OHMYGOSSIP — Joseph Kosinski has revealed the script for ‘Tron: Ascension’ is near completion.
The 42-year-old director 2010’s ‘Tron: Legacy’ – the sequel to 1982 movie ‘Tron’, about characters trapped inside a computer programme – says the story for the movie is around “80 per cent” ready, although a start date for shooting commencing is still almost a year away.
Speaking to Collider, Kosinski said: “This movie’s called ‘Tron: Ascension’, and I think we got the script to … about 80 per cent. We were in good shape, we were probably eight or nine months out, which is still a long distance from being ready to shoot it. What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine.”
The original movie became a cult classic and starred Jeff Bridges as computer programmer Kevin Flynn who is transported inside the software world of a mainframe computer known as the Grid which he must escape from.
The second installment follows Flynn’s son Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) who whilst investigating the disappearance of his father receives a long lost message from him and is himself transported to the virtual reality world of the Grid in which he must team up with his father and the algorithm Quorra (Olivia Wilde) to stop the malevolent programme CLU from invading the human world.
Kosinski has explained that the idea for the ‘Tron: Ascension’ script came from basing the first act in the real world, the second act in the world of Tron, the multiple worlds of Tron and the third act in the real world.
He said: “I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of Tron in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But also, there’s a real kind of interesting character study in Quorra, a stranger in a strange land trying to where she belongs, having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in?”
Despite the film being delayed – it was previously reported that the project had been shelved following the under-performance of Disney’s futuristic film ‘Tomorrowland’, which starred George Clooney – Kosinski is certain it is just a matter of time before the film goes into production.
He said: “The idea’s strong, I think it’s just a matter of the right time, the right place, and the stars aligning as they have to do for movies, and we’ll see.”
