I’m torn over streaming, says Richard Linklater

OHMYGOSSIP — Richard Linklater feels “torn” over the rise of streaming platforms.
The 63-year-old filmmaker has confessed to having mixed feelings about the relatively recent rise of platforms like Netflix and Spotify, which have helped to make content more accessible than ever before.
Speaking to Interview magazine, he explained: “It’s so weird. I feel so torn.
“On one hand, this was a dream when you’re sitting there in the eighties trying to find a movie.”
On the other hand, Richard appreciates that fans are able to access what they want, when they want it.
The director – whose film credits include ‘School of Rock’ and ‘Boyhood’ – said: “If there’s one thing different now, it’s just obviously the availability is everywhere.
“But if someone had told you, you wouldn’t be spending your time in a record store the way you used to, or a bookstore. And I think technology goes toward people’s wants like, ‘Hey, that song you just heard, just push a button and you can listen to the song 12 seconds later instead of going and looking for it in a used record store.'”
Meanwhile, Cate Blanchett previously admitted that she missed the cinema experience amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Hollywood star remains fond of the cinema experience, despite the rise of streaming platforms.
She told the BBC: “Personally, I miss sitting in the dark with strangers and I miss that about going to live music, to going to the theatre and to going to the cinema.
“Maybe I’m wildly optimistic, but I still hope that when things get a little more stable, I think people will crave to see things large and big in a cinema, so what looks like a disastrous situation for cinema could actually be a positive.”
