Twiggy turned down Steve McQueen
OHMYGOSSIP — Former model Twiggy has admitted to rejecting the movie legend Steve McQueen at a party in the 1960s. The 65-year-old former model – real name Lesley Hornby – recalled how she rejected the ‘Great Escape’ legend when he asked her to dance at a party held at the pop duo Sonny & Cher’s home in Los Angeles during the 1960s when she was just a teenager.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph newspaper, Twiggy said: “At the end of the party we heard the roar of a motorbike that came up onto the lawn. It was Steve McQueen.
“He said, ‘Do you want to dance?’ And I said no! I was so shy – it was Steve McQueen!”
The model-turned-designer – who has a clothing collection with Marks & Spencer – also revealed that before she was spotted there was nobody who looked like her in the fashion industry.
She said: “Nobody looked like me then, you’ve got to remember. I mean Jean Shrimpton was breathtaking, she was my idol and I had her all over my bedroom walls. She was this nymph, she was 5ft 10, long brown hair, the face of an angel.
“But nobody looked like I did. I was just funny, quirky.”
