Chronicle 2 script is ‘dark’

OHMYGOSSIP — Screenwriter Max Landis has given an update on ‘Chronicle 2’, revealing that he is reworking the script because the initial draft is “dark”.

‘Chronicle 2’ has a “dark script”.

Screenwriter Max Landis revealed the follow-up to 2012’s surprise sci-fi hit is still a work in progress amidst speculation that studio 20th Century Fox wasn’t happy with his proposed script for the sequel.

The writer’s father, famed film director John Landis, previously suggested that Fox disapproved of his son’s screenplay for the sequel – however, Landis disputes this, claiming that although the studio liked the script, they are working on a “compromise” for the next movie as the studio feels it’s too dark.

He told IGN Middle East: “They liked my script. It’s just a really dark script. The question is more of, ‘How do we all compromise to get something we want?’ And that’s an incredibly slow process.

“There was this whole announcement that they wanted to just do the same thing again because my father said that. My father is not involved in ‘Chronicle 2’. He doesn’t know the process; it was not his place to say that.”

Landis admits that following up the critically acclaimed film is a daunting task as both he and the studio don’t want to “make a bad movie”.

He added: “The truth is when you have a movie that was as successful as ‘Chronicle’ was, it’s not as quick of a process. There are a lot more voices coming in and saying, ‘This is what the sequel should be’ because there’s a bigger expectation and a bigger fear of failure.

“There’s no one at the studio who wants to make a bad movie. They all want to make a good movie just as much as I do.”

‘Chronicle’, which starred Dane DeHaan, proved to be a major box office success, earning over $100 million on a $12 million budget.
