Sienna Miller awarded £100k over NOTW hacking

Sienna Miller is to be awarded approximately £100,000 in damages from the News of the World after suing the publication for hacking her phone. Lawyers for the G.I. Joe actress stated that there had been a full admission of liability from the paper’s publisher News International and Miller had been vindicated.

In accepting the settlement that was reportedly first offered to her last month, Miller will discover exactly how her privacy was breached when her legal team attend a private meeting with the paper to hear the “extent of the wrongdoing”.

Miller’s counsel Hugh Tomlinson QC said: “I make the position clear that Ms Miller is proceeding in this way precisely because Mr Silverleaf indicated yesterday all her claims have been admitted – misuse of private information, breach of confidence, publication of articles derived from voicemail hacking and a course of conduct of harassment over a period of more than 12 months.

“In those circumstances, her primary concern is not how much money is awarded by way of compensation but to know exactly what the extent was of the hacking which took place and, having obtained an order which will enable her to know that – so far as it is knowable – that meets all her requirements from this action.”

It is believed that Miller’s damages will be finalised and a full judgement on the case will be delivered at London’s High Court next Friday.

The News of the World’s phone hacking scandal began in 2006 after it emerged that the voicemails of royal aids had been hacked into by the paper’s former royal editor.

The revelation prompted the launch of a number of lawsuits by celebrities alleging that they had also been hacked, forcing the newspaper to admit liability in several cases and print a formal apology for its actions last month.
