The Duchess of Cornwall bonded with Duchess Catherine’s uncle at the royal wedding.
Gary Goldsmith – brother of Catherine’s mother, Carole Middleton – was involved in a tabloid drug scandal in 2009 but his family stuck by him and he was invited to the nuptials of Catherine and Prince William in April 2011.
While he was at the reception, William’s stepmother, Camilla, came up to him and said she could sympathise with him because she had received a lot of bad press in her time.
Gary said: “Camilla came up to me and I just said, ‘I’m really sorry for the bad press,’ and ‘Isn’t it a fabulous day? Aren’t we all having fun?’ Leading up to the wedding I got a lot of bad press about attending. It was quite hurtful so I just apologised for it, but Camilla just said, ‘Don’t think twice about it. I get the same myself.’
“She was incredible – incredibly charming – and I just fell in love with her. I thought she was fabulous. She made an absolute point to come straight over, which was so touching.”
Despite the scandal, Gary was confident he would be invited to the wedding because they’re all such a close family.
He told Britain’s Hello! magazine: “I didn’t think for a second that I wouldn’t be invited. We are family – I’ve known Kate since she was born.
“As a family unit, our family is very small, so I didn’t think I’d be excluded.”
