Billy Joel surprised at own success

Billy Joel thinks his success is “not right”. The 61-year-old musician – who has sold over 100 million records worldwide – admits his lavish lifestyle still mystifies him but he stays grounded because he doesn’t take anything for granted.

He said: “I’ve been very fortunate to be able to make a living from my music. And it turned into this insane success.

“Because I didn’t do it to become famous, I did it because I love it.

“I still pinch myself. I’m from Levittown – the first housing estate in America.

“I don’t belong in limos and private jets or on stage with people cheering me, but that’s what has kept it fun and kept me grounded because I know it’s not right.”

The veteran singer admits he is unsure if he will ever tour again after completing a joint concert series with Sir Elton John in March, but refuses to make a decision on retiring as he never knows what the future holds.

He added in an interview with The Sun newspaper: “I like playing and interacting with other musicians but I don’t like the travel or the schlepping or routine.

“Elton wanted to work again this summer but I’m going to take a break.

“I’m not announcing my retirement either because that’s a fatal error. I’ve been considering not performing since I was 40 but I just see what happens.”
