Brooke Elliott takes Drop Dead Diva seriously
Brooke Elliott has admitted that she tries to ensure that her show Drop Dead Diva will not offend viewers. The series follows a blonde model, Deb, who dies and is reincarnated in the body of an overweight lawyer called Jane.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Elliott, who plays Jane, explained that she has asked for parts of the show to be changed in the past.
“There have been a couple of times where I went, ‘I think that’s too much’,” she said. “You have to be careful, because the audience really identifies with Jane… so they take those comments as if they’re being said to them personally.
“You’ve got to be really careful not to offend your audience or make them feel like you would at all be saying that about them. It’s something I’m actually very aware of and pay very close attention to. As a responsibility and a duty to the character of Jane, I take it very seriously. Our writers do, too.”
However, Elliott explained that she is pleased that the show is about more than just body image.
“There’s so much more to it,” she said. “That’s the point of what we’re saying – stop looking at just weight, we are entire people all the time. We are more than just what we look like.”
The second season of Drop Dead Diva continues on Sunday at 9pm on Lifetime in the US. The first season airs in the UK on Thursdays at 8pm on Living.
