Jay Blades defends breaking royal protocol with King Charles on The Repair Shop

OHMYGOSSIP — Jay Blades has defended breaking royal protocol with King Charles on ‘The Repair Shop’.
The star believes if the 73-year-old monarch felt a regal boundary was being crossed “he would have said” when they filmed a special edition of the BBC One restoration programme, which aired on Wednesday night (26.10.22).
While appearing on ITV’s ‘Good Morning Britain’, the 52-year-old TV presenter said: “I was touching him and he was returning the touch as well, so the royal protocol is by the person who is a royal. If he didn’t want me to touch him he would have said or someone would have told me, and he would have done that.”
Jay – who appeared alongside the then-Prince of Wales before his mother Queen Elizabeth passed away in September – felt he “bonded” with the king due to their shared love of “heritage craft”.
He said: “But I think the way that we have this mutual interest in heritage craft, that’s what bonded us together.”
Speaking about some viewers describing him and Charles as “the new Ant and Dec”, he said: “The new Ant and Dec? Ant and Dec are really good. Bromance? I think it’s just that we’ve got a shared interest and heritage craft, so we just get on. I get on with everybody I believe.”
Prior to the broadcast, Jay felt their collaboration and how they got on so well – due to their very different backgrounds – was “unbelievable”.
He said: “You’ve got someone from a council estate and someone from a royal estate that have the same interests about apprenticeships and heritage crafts, and it is unbelievable to see that two people from so far apart, from different ends of the spectrum, actually have the same interests.”
