Pop Idol to return?

OHMYGOSSIP — ITV are said to be considering bringing ‘Pop Idol’ back.
Bosses at the channel are looking at rebooting the Noughties singing talent competition – which ran for two seasons with judges Simon Cowell, Pete Waterman, Dr Neil Fox, and Nicki Chapman, and was hosted by Ant and Dec – to celebrate the show’s 21st anniversary.
An insider told the Daily Star newspaper: “With ‘Gladiators’ and ‘Big Brother’ returning, it is a no-brainer to bring back another hit.”
Currently, the plan is to produce a reunion special with a retrospective from the judging panel and contestants – which could include winners Will Young and Michelle McManus, along with breakout star Gareth Gates – later this year.
The source said: “There have been talks about a reunion special as a one off – nothing more.”
Another insider explained to the newspaper that “absolutely nothing is confirmed” but brought doubts about the show – which was replaced by ‘The X Factor’, which ran from 2004 to 2018 – returning in its original format, saying “it would be unlikely to return as a full series”.
In May, Will – who since clinching victory on the first edition of the programme has gone on to have a successful career in the music and theatre – spoke out about rumours of the show’s potential return.
The 43-year-old pop star said: “I have heard the rumours, yes, but I don’t know anything concrete. I think it would be fun, if it was done in the right way.
“Because there’s no ‘X Factor’, it’d be brilliant. There was only ever two series of ‘Pop Idol’, so it could be interesting. A laugh.
“There would have to be a wellbeing coach, or something there, for me to do it, to make sure everything was done properly.
“If I was offered it, that’s what I would say, I would only do it if there was – it’s such a big part of what I do now, I couldn’t do it and not feel that people are being looked after.”
