OHMYGOSSIP — Bruno Tonioli says he was “playing a character” on ‘Strictly Come Dancing.’
The 66-year-old choreographer – who sat on the judging panel of the BBC ballroom dancing show from 2004 until 2020 –explained that on screen, his accent became “stronger” and that all expressions became “bigger” but admitted it was an effort to keep it up for two hours at a time.
He told The Daily Mail: ‘I’m playing a character. My accent becomes stronger, the facial expressions and body movements become bigger.
“You have to pump yourself up and keep it up for two hours. That’s so hard when you have all the added stress of the travel.”
The Italian-born star – who lives in West Hollywood – travelled back and forth for 14 years to appear on both ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ in the UK and ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in the US but the pandemic made his schedule impossible came to a mutual decision with the BBC that it was time to leave.
He added: “There is no animosity, it was a mutual decision with both of us saying, ‘Listen, this is not going to work like it used to’ I just couldn’t do the flying anymore. I don’t know how I survived that schedule. To be honest, it’s a miracle. I have no idea what it did to my health, don’t go there! There was a moment in the middle of a run when I blanked. I did not know where I was or what I was doing. It only lasted a second, then I saw the audience looking at me and it all came back to me.”
Bruno praised Anton Du Beke, who took over from Tonioli on the panel last year for making it his own.
He said: “He did a very good job because he made it his own.”
