Gary Lucy hopes Hollyoaks death storyline will help real-life families

OHMYGOSSIP — Gary Lucy hopes his hard-hitting ‘Hollyoaks’ plot will help real-life families.
The 40-year-old soap veteran’s character Luke Morgan has been battling Frontotemporal dementia for two years, and the actor believes it has been “important” to show the family members who have also been affected, as he gears up to say goodbye to the Channel 4 soap.
Gary – who has been involved with the show since 1999 – told Metro.co.uk: “It’s the family members around that watch this loved one deteriorate – you’re losing part of them all the time. It’s important to show that, because it’s those family members that this storyline will hopefully help.”
The former ‘EastEnders’ star says production have “done our best” to honour the “seriousness” of the plot by consulting medical professionals and loved-ones about the brain condition.
Gary said: “We’ve done our best with [the storyline]. I was able to sit in with a lot of the creative meetings, and it made me appreciate the seriousness and the responsible way that soaps treat these storylines.
“They bring in a neurologist, who specialises in this condition, and families who have got parents or uncles going through – or have been through – this illness.”
The former ‘Footballers’ Wives’ star – whose own grandmother has lived with dementia for 12 years – revealed his character “wants one big trip” before he marries his fiancee Cindy Cunningham (Stephanie Waring) and succumbs to the disease.
He said: “Luke wants one big trip, because he’s not sure how long he’s got left when he’s in the present.”
Gary – who jetted off with some cast and crew to Mallorca last month – tried to get everyone to stop pointing out it was their “last scene together” as it was “killing” him.
He said: “So many people said, ‘This is our last scene together,’ and they’d get emotional and upset. I’d be like, ‘Don’t! I’ve got another [scene] yet. I can’t keep going through this emotional rollercoaster, because it’s killing me.’ ”
