Sue Devaney wants to commit to Coronation Street for years

OHMYGOSSIP — Sue Devaney wants to stay on ‘Coronation Street’ and become a cobbles legend.
The 54-year-old actress has been a hit on the ITV soap since returning as Debbie Webster – mechanic Kevin’s sister – in 2019.
Although her initial stint was only supposed to be for a few months, Sue signed a new contract which keeps her on the show until April 2022, but she is ready to commit her future to ‘Corrie’ long-term.
Speaking on the ‘Conversation Street’ podcast, she said: “You know what? I just love it, I love my job. I go in every day, I drive to work with a big smile on my face, I come home and I can put my washing on, I can shout upstairs to my partner, I’m not packing a bag every two minutes. I love playing Debbie Webster, so if they want me I’d love to stay.”
Although she wants to remain on ‘Coronation Street’, Sue is aware that her fate is in the hands of the writers and she feared her time was up when she got a script which revealed she was going to be locked in a walk-in freezer with her on-screen brother Kevin (Michael Le Vell)
She said: “When you get your script you think, ‘Oh, I’m stuck in a freezer, I wonder if I die in this freezer? I hope it’s not now.’
“I just think a contract is for as long as the writers and producers and the other actors still want you there. It’s the writers really who have to think, ‘That’s a brilliant story.’ “
“Sometimes it’s not to do with whether the character is a success or not, it’s do with a brilliant storyline and if it means at the end of it you perish then so be it.”
Sue first played Debbie back in 1984 when she was just 17, and she thinks it’s fate that brought her back to Weatherfield as there had been several opportunities to return before that didn’t work out.
She said: “I was 17 when I left and over the years they’ve invited me back, I think about four or five times, and I’ve always been doing something else or it’s never quite worked out or they had the storyline and then it got scrapped.
“Actually, I think now it just feels right, the time feels right, so it’s just wonderful.”
