Parminder Nagra to star in new ITV crime drama DI Ray

OHMYGOSSIP — ITV is launching new crime thriller ‘DI Ray’.
Parminder Nagra will star as Detective Inspector Rachita Ray, a police officer who finds herself wrapped up in a case that forces her to confront personal issues with her South Asian heritage.
In a statement, Nagra, 45, said: “I am so looking forward to getting back to the UK after such a challenging time globally to be part of this exciting new project.”
The series’ creator is former ‘Line of Duty’ actress May Sondhi – who played PC Maneet Bindra in the BBC hit as well as Shazia in the sitcom ‘Citizen Khan’ – whilst ‘Line of Duty’ creator Jed Mercurio will executive produce the series alongside Madonna Baptiste with Alex Pillai directing.
Speaking about the show, Sondhi said: “This is a project which is deeply personal for me as a British Asian Brummie woman. It’s only in the past 10 years or so I’ve really been able to truly embrace my heritage. So much of this show is my story and in telling it honestly, I hope others from all different backgrounds will relate.”
Nagra – who came to prominence playing Jess Bharma in the cult hit ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ alongside Keira Knightley – has nothing but praise for Sondhi’s script.
She said: “Written by Maya Sondhi and exec produced by the force that is Jed Mercurio, we are being helmed by an amazing team to bring something special to our story telling landscape.”
The Birmingham-set series will see Rachita receive a much sought-after promotion, only for her to suspect she is the ‘token appointment’ when the murder case is called a ‘Culturally Specific Homicide’.
As the four-part series unfolds, Rachita becomes determined to not only find the killer but call out the obvious biases in the force and bring an end to her identity crisis.
The thriller is being produced by HTM Television, the team behind the critically acclaimed drama ‘Stephen’, which told the tragic true story of the murder of Stephen Lawrence.
Mercurio said on behalf of HTM Television: “Everyone at HTM Television is thrilled to be collaborating with writer Maya Sondhi, director Alex Pillai and star Parminder Nagra on such a thought-provoking series. DI Ray is first and foremost a thriller, while Maya’s writing poses complex and timely questions about the nature of personal ethnic identity.”
‘DI Ray’ will be filmed in the Midlands during the autumn of 2021.
