Sherlock star Una Stubbs dies aged 94

OHMYGOSSIP — British TV legend Una Stubbs has died at the age of 84.
The actress, whose illustrious career spanned seven decades, passed away at her home in Edinburgh surrounded by her family on Thursday (12.08.21).
Her agent Rebecca Blond confirmed Una’s death in a statement.
She said: “We are desperately sad to have lost not only a wonderful actress, whose screen and stage career, spanning over 50 years, was so extraordinarily varied, from ‘Till Death Us Do Part’ to ‘Sherlock’, as well as memorable performances in the West End, at the Old Vic, Donmar Warehouse, Sheffield Crucible and National Theatre, but also a wickedly funny, elegant, stylish, graceful, gracious and kind and constant friend.”
Una’s family also commented on their tragic loss, saying: “Mum passed away quietly today with her family around her, in Edinburgh.
“We ask for privacy and understanding at this most difficult and sad of times.”
In recent years, Una was best known for playing Mrs. Hudson in the BBC reimagining of ‘Sherlock’, the landlady of Benedict Cumberbatch’s titular detective.
But she had enjoyed a long and varied career which started in the 1960s with roles in Sir Cliff Richard’s movie ‘Summer Holiday’ and as Rita, the exasperated daughter of Alf Garnett in ‘Til Death Do us Part’.
Una then became a mainstay on British television screens, playing roles such as Aunt Sally in ‘Worzel Gummidge’ and outlandish chanting teacher Miss Bat in the hit CITV show ‘The Worst Witch’. She also appeared in ‘EastEnders’, ‘The Catherine Tate Show’ and hit sitcom ‘Benidorm’.
Since news of her passing broke tributes have poured in for the beloved actress.
‘Absolutely Fabulous’ star Joanna Lumley wrote on Twitter: “Devastated to hear about the passion of the brilliant Una Stubbs. My thoughts go out to her family and friends at this very sad time.”
Her feelings were echoed by ex ‘Coronation Street’ star Sarah Lancashire who tweeted: “Rest in peace, Una Stubbs. Shocked at this news. Such a great actress. Sad news. Thoughts go out to her family and friends.”
‘Sherlock’ co-creator Mark Gatiss offered an emotional Twitter post, which read: “It was one of the great joys of my life to work so closely with and to adore Una Stubbs. She was a wonderful, wonderful woman and a great and serenely graceful actor. Mischief was in her blood. We were so blessed that she became our imperishable Mrs Hudson. Goodbye, darling.”
