Desmond’s given a ‘racial stereotyping’ warning by BritBox.

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Desmond’s’ has been given a “racial stereotyping” warning by BritBox.
The digital video subscription service has slapped Channel 4’s longest running sitcom, set in a south London barbershop, with a warning for one particular episode called ‘Hello Auntie Susu’.
A spokesperson for BritBox said: “It reflects the warning used by Channel 4 for the same episode”.
The controversy centres on a discussion around racial stereotypes with one of the characters suggesting “the Japanese are small”.
He said: “Baldness is hereditary, like the Japanese are small. You ever see a Japanese basketball team?”
There is then a reference to “slanted eyes” and a suggestion that the Japanese are not well-endowed.
Writer Trix Worrell – who penned 71 episodes of the hugely successful comedy – hails from St Lucia and the show features a predominantly black British cast.
‘Desmond’s’ is the best known work of 61 year old Worrell, who is a BAFTA nominee and British Comedy and Royal Television award winner. It’s considered so much of a British institution that an excerpt from the show was used for the Opening Ceremony at the 2012 Olympics in London.
Worrell also features on the website ‘100 Great Black Britons’, which suggests that Desmond’s played a pivotal role in explaining some of the complexities of “black migrant experiences in Britain” to “both black and white audiences”.
It reads: “Through Desmond’s Worrell was able to work through some of the complex issues which are important features of black migrant experiences in Britain that would make sense to both black and white audiences, and to show that black families experience the same joys and problems as white families.”
It’s not the only comedy to have been given a warning by BritBox censors. Viewers of another British comedy classic ‘One Foot In The Grave’ are told it contains “mild language”, while the likes of ‘Gavin and Stacey’ and ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ are said to contain offensive language. Certain documentaries also carry a warning as does the children’s show ‘Captain Scarlet’ which is said to be violent due to explosions and guns.
