EastEnders’ Balvinder Sopal had concerns about playing ‘horrible’ character

OHMYGOSSIP — Balvinder Sopal had reservations about playing her “horrible” ‘EastEnders’ character.
The 41-year-old star was concerned about the social media hate she might receive because of her calculated character Suki Panesar, who has rocked Albert Square in recent months after lying about having cancer and framing her son Jags Panesar, who was later killed in prison.
She said: “I think you switch it on and you just do it.
“Initially I was like, ‘Oh no, man. I don’t want to play this kind of character. She’s horrible and everyone is going to hate her.’
“Social media, there’s proof there, people are like, ‘Wow, she deserves everything she gets,’ and I didn’t want to listen to that or hear that.”
Despite her initial concerns, the former ‘Call the Midwife’ actress has found it “a lot of fun” taking on the “challenging” role.
Speaking on the BBC’s ‘Asian Network Breakfast with Harpz Kaur’, she added: “But it’s a lot of fun playing a bad character. I’ve never played a character like this.
“It’s challenging. The most important thing is you’ve got to bed it in some reality.
“You’ve got to make it real.”
Last year, Balvinder admitted Suki makes her “work hard” as an actor.
She said: “She’s been brilliant. She’s really made me work hard, and I quite like that as it’s not come naturally.
“And I don’t just mean because I’m not a villainous person; but in terms of making it interesting, and not just playing one-dimensional villainy, trying to find more softer parts to her, even though there aren’t that many.
“She’s a no-nonsense, unapologetic character, and I quite like that about her.”
