Alexander Wang: You always have to have something that creates tension and friction
OHMYGOSSIP — Alexander Wang likes his clothes to create ”tension and fiction”. The 30-year-old designer – who recently showcased his new sneaker-inspired collection at New York Fashion Week – revealed he deliberately tried to make striking contrasts between each garment.
He explained: ”The sneaker has always been something that’s part of my generation’s daily life. I thought, why don’t we take this idea and apply it to the clothes and take what’s most recognisable – the codes, colourways and patterning, and create these girl gangs.
”You always have to have something that creates tension and friction – something that doesn’t quite make sense. So I thought let’s take a look at something more precious and romantic – like Madame Gres and Fortuny pleats – and contrast them with the very deliberate immediacy of sneakers.”
The designer is also hoping that his new collection is more ”flirtatious” than some past offerings.
He added to Grazia magazine: ”In recent seasons, sexuality has been about covering up, masculinity and understatement.
”But I was ready to see the waist and I wanted to see the skin and see sexuality promoted in this collection. I wanted it to be flirtatious.”
