Shelley King struggled to meet other gay women

OHMYGOSSIP — Shelley King “tried to have relationships” with men as she struggled to meet other gay women.
The ‘Coronation Street’ star – who plays Yasmeen Metcalfe on the ITV soap – has opened up about her sexuality and the struggles she has in the 1980s when she found it difficult to find gay women open about their sexuality.
She told Metro.co.uk: “At drama school, I was close friends with a gay man, but the gay women were nowhere to be found. It felt as if I was all alone.
“So much so that I tried to have relationships with straight men but I had no emotional connection and it only ended up hurting them.
“I thought that when I became a professional actor I would come into contact with gay women but had no luck.”
The 65-year-old actress – who had a couple of relationships before meeting her now-wife Trilby 24 years ago – came out to her parents aged 42 after feeling an instant attraction.
She added: “She had never had a relationship with a woman and it was so difficult for both of us.
“But almost instantly we had an inexorable attraction. We are soulmates. It’s as if there is an umbilical cord between us. It’s not always plain sailing, but the ship will never break.”
Shelley urged other people to not “be afraid” of being themselves, as she reflected on her own experiences.
She said: “Whatever the circumstances, the people who really love you will support you.”
Meanwhile, she heaped praise on Trilby earlier this year after admitting her dark ‘Corrie’ plot – which saw her character in a domestic abuse storyline with Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew) – impacted her personal life.
She said: “I’ve been hell to live with – I mean, poor Trilby! Thank goodness she’s a wonderful director and actor and understands the process that we all have to go through.”
