Adil Ray: Citizen Khan wouldn’t be commissioned nowadays

OHMYGOSSIP — Adil Ray doesn’t think ‘Citizen Khan’ would be commissioned nowadays because it “wouldn’t pass the woke test”.
The 47-year-old star thinks TV bosses would snub the chance to make the sitcom – which first aired in 2012 and follows the trials and tribulations of community leader Mr Khan (Adil), a British Pakistani man living in Birmingham – if it was a new idea in 2021, because of cancel culture.
Speaking on ‘Good Morning Britain’ – which he is guest co-hosting alongside Susanna Reid – he said: “I don’t think ‘Citizen Khan’ would get commissioned now.”
Susanna asked: “It wouldn’t pass the woke test?”
Adil – who was born in Birmingham – replied: “No, it wouldn’t. Whatever that woke test is.”
The star is in talks with the BBC about a special episode of the programme next year, but he faces some “hard conversations” with bosses about what his titular character can say “about Indian people and immigrants”.
He said: “We’re speaking to the BBC now about doing a special next year, and I think there will be some hard conversations to be had about what Mr Khan can say out of his mouth about Indian people, about immigrants.
“He did a lot of that, but the joke was on him and his vulnerabilities.”
The ‘Lingo’ presenter admitted a number of people in the Muslim community told him they were offended by the show when it first aired.
But he has since been told by the same people they now find the programme “funny”.
He added: “I had a strange journey with ‘Citizen Khan’.
“When it first happened I was shocked people were offended.
“I was like, ‘Well, it’s not really my fault that they’re offended.’
“By the end of it I got to the point where I realised it was a good thing they were offended, and the Muslim community in particular, because what they realised was actually they were initially offended by it, but years later they came to me said, ‘Actually, we find it really funny now. We sit down as a family and watch it.’
“Sometimes you can be offended by something, and then realise, ‘Why was I so offended?’ ”
Adil’s comments come after Jennifer Saunders claimed this week that ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ wouldn’t be made today due to cancel culture.
She said: “What p****s me off? Quite a lot of stuff actually. I get p****d off by people and gentle criticism all the time. This is a modern thing, isn’t it? If someone says something it always has to be, ‘Oh, but sorry, you can’t say that’. I say, ‘Oh f*** off’.
“It’s not a crime to have an opinion or say something. It is always petty and small-mindedness that p*** me off — bigotry and small-mindedness.”
