Chloé Zhao: The film industry needs to do better
OHMYGOSSIP — Chloé Zhao thinks the film industry needs to “do better”.
The ‘Nomadland’ director believes that Hollywood needs to make improvements when it comes to sexism and racism, and whilst she feels very “lucky”, she realises there are still “problems”.
She said: “Does the industry have sexism, racism…? Yeah, 100 per cent. There’s no doubt about it, we need to do better. I’m lucky, but it doesn’t mean I don’t think there’s problems … If you stay true to what you want to do – the type of stories you want to tell, the way you want to tell them – you attract the right people around you. I don’t want to compromise.”
And Chloé opened up about spending her “definitive years” in the UK, where she feels most of her creativity came from.
Speaking to inews.co.uk, she added: “I probably have a little bit of bias favouring the British, because from when I was 14 until I was 18, those are very definitive years. I was looking around on the stone beach of Brighton and being very emo! A lot of teenage angst in those cloudy days, but those are some very creative years I had.”
‘Nomadland’ and Chloé herself is having a great awards season, most recently collecting the EE BAFTA Best Film award as well as the Best Director gong for herself.
Accepting the award, she said: “Thank you BAFTA again, thank you so much. We would like to dedicate this award to the nomadic community, who so generously welcomed us into their lives. They shared with us their dreams, their struggles and their deep sense of dignity. Thank you for showing us that ageing is a beautiful part of life, a journey we should all cherish and celebrate. How we treat our elders shows us a lot about how we are as a society and we need to do better. Thank you again members of BAFTA and we hope to see you again down the road.”
