Tony Robinson explores Roman innovation in new documentary

OHMYGOSSIP — Sir Tony Robinson is starring in a new mini-documentary about the Roman influence in common trades.
The 74-year-old actor has joined forces with Checkatrade to explain how the Romans were instrumental in developing common modern-day trades.
Tony – who played the iconic comedy character Baldrick in ‘Blackadder’ – said: “I love using my passion for history to shine a light on little-known facts – with three quarters of us unaware that the Romans used many of the building techniques we take for granted now.
“It’s fascinating to highlight the Roman innovations that are still popular amongst homeowners and tradespeople so many centuries later.”
The documentary explores how the Romans helped to develop modern-day trades like underfloor heating.
And research conducted by Checkatrade has underlined the knowledge gap in Britain about the Roman influence on modern-day life, with only 35 per cent of people knowing that the Romans had brought plumbing across the English Channel.
Mike Fairman, the CEO of Checkatrade, said: “We hear the expression ‘jobs for life’ but working as a trade means you have a job for millennia. Skills such as painting and plastering have truly stood the test of time.
“Not only have they existed since Roman times, they are also more in demand than ever, with searches on Checkatrade.com hitting an all-time high last month.”
Tony has always been passionate about history, and the comedy star previously admitted to being heavily influenced by his parents.
The actor shared: “I have always been fascinated by history even before I knew what the word meant. The interest came from my mum and dad.
“I mean, I was an only child growing up in London after the war. I was born in 1946 so World War Two wasn’t a distant memory, and they both had lots of stories about their wartime experiences.”

For more Roman inspired content, Checkatrade’s latest ad campaign sees famously betrayed Emperor, Julius Caesar, reject questionable tradesperson suggestions from his neighbour and former friend, Brutus, leaving Caesar more satisfied and reassured by the checks and recommendations he gets from Checkatrade.
