Nicola Coughlan leads Paul Ritter tributes after star’s death

OHMYGOSSIP — Nicola Coughlan has paid tribute to Paul Ritter.
The ‘Friday Night Dinner’ actor has died aged 54 from a brain tumour, and the ‘Derry Girls’ star has described Paul – who played Martin Goodman in the Channel 4 sitcom – as “absolutely magic” in an emotional social media post.
She tweeted: “So, so sad to hear this. I was such a fan of Paul Ritter he was absolutely magic, RIP”.
Many fans and stars have been quoting some of Martin’s beloved catchphrases on social media.
Former ‘X Factor’ contestant Jack Remmington wrote: “Lovely bit of squirrel Jackie RIP to a legend”.
Through his varied career, Paul appeared as Anatoly Dyatlov in the multi award-winning TV series ‘Chernobyl’, and as Jeremy Hutchinson in ‘The Trial of Christine Keeler’, as well as starring in the likes of ‘Vera’, ‘Cold Feet’, and ‘No Offence’.
And he was no stranger to the big screen, having played Eldred Worple in ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ and Guy Haines in 2008 James Bond blockbuster ‘Quantum of Solace’.
‘Still Game’ comedian Sanjeev Kohli paid tribute to the diversity of Paul’s roles, and his “versatile” skills as a performer.
He said: “Paul Ritter was one of the most versatile & brilliant actors that has ever drawn breath.
“If Paul Ritter was in something, it made it good. This is horrendous news.”
Many fans recalled Martin’s “s*** on it” catchphrase on social media in reaction to the news, and others paid tribute to his incredible talents.
One wrote: “Not Paul Ritter. This is unbelievably sad. Entire family individually cried ‘no’. Extraordinary actor – watch an episode of ‘Friday Night Dinner’ then immediately watch the 1st episode of ‘Chernobyl’ to see his range. No age to go.”
Another added: “Oh God, this is terrible devastating news. Paul was a stunning actor, a lovely lovely guy. How utterly dreadful.”
Paul starred as Martin in all six ‘Friday Night Dinner’ series – alongside Tamsin Greig, Simon Bird, Tom Rosenthal and Mark Heap – from 2011 to 2020.
He’s set to posthumously appear in the sitcom’s pre-recorded 10th anniversary show later this year.
