Former Miss Malaysia Soo Wincci offered $385,000 to be Datuk’s plaything

OHMYGOSSIP — Beauty queen-turned-pop star Soo Wincci is no stranger to having rich men coming up to her and offering her sums that range from RM30,000 (S$11,570) to even RM1 million for ‘special services’. According to an article on AsiaOne, such offers are nothing new in the industry and she has been getting them since day one, said Wincci.

“It started when I was still in the pageant,” said the Kuala Lumpur lass, who was crowned Miss World Malaysia in 2008. “There would be different rich people approaching me and other girls, using really nice words and very smart ways to sugarcoat their requests.”

In a phone interview with Daily Chilli, the gorgeous 28-year-old, who has carved out a successful career in the local TV and music scene, recounted her multiple encounters with wealthy men who were looking for beautiful, young playthings.

“There are different scenarios. There was once I performed in Genting. My manager and I were already packing up our stuff and on our way out. Some helper came backstage and asked me, ‘How much do you want for a meal (together)? I can offer you RM30,000’. I just straightaway told the person, ‘I don’t do that kind of thing’.

“Another one came in the form of a so-called endorsement. There were four Datuks and they said they wanted to employ me as the ‘Junior CEO’ of their company and I didn’t have to do anything other than fly around and do ‘PR work’. They were offering me RM1 million for a year.

“There was also a time when someone invited me to a dinner event, where ‘there would only be a few Datuks’. Doesn’t that sound fishy?”

All this, and not counting some investors who asked the star, straight up: “Do you provide sleeping services?”

These men look down on women, especially the entertainers or beauty queens, thinking that they can be bought with money, said Wincci.

“Some would say things like ‘Aiya, no need to sing lah. Just become my girlfriend’. As a girl, I’m offended. I just can’t do it. It’s not about the money. My conscience does not allow me to do it. If I accept these offers, all my hard work would be wasted,” she explained.

However, she said a girl has to be tactful in turning down these offers. “You don’t want to offend them because these are men with status. And it’s pointless to argue with them because they’ve always been like that.

Datuk is a traditional Malay honorific title commonly used in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei. Its variant is Dato and its equivalent is Datu in the Philippines.

The oldest historical records mentioning about the title datuk is the 7th century Srivijayan inscriptions such as Telaga Batu to describe lesser kings or vassalized kings. It was called dātu in Old Malay language to describe regional leader or elder, a kind of chieftain that rules of a collection of kampungs (villages). The Srivijaya empire was describes as a network of mandala that consists of settlements, villages, and ports each ruled by a datu that vowed their loyalty (persumpahan) to the central administration of Srivijayan Maharaja. Unlike the indianized title of raja and maharaja, the term datuk was also found in the Philippines as datu, which suggests its common native Austronesian origin. The term kadatwan or kedaton refer to the residence of datuk, equivalent with keraton and istana. In later Mataram Javanese culture, the term kedaton shifted to refer the inner private compound of the keraton, the residential complex of king and royal family.
