Doctor Who’s John Barrowman would ‘love’ transgender Doctor

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Doctor Who’ star John Barrowman would “love to see a transgender Doctor” when Jodie Whittaker moves on.
The 53-year-old star – who plays Captain Jack Harkness on the beloved BBC sci-fi show – has called on bosses to “take another leap” by having an LGBTQ+ Time Lord in the TARDIS once the first ever female Doctor leaves the role.
He told Metro.co.uk: “I’d love to see a transgender Doctor. I think that would be awesome.”
He also suggested an “androgynous, gender non-specific person” would be “really good” for the part.
He added: “With Jodie, they made a leap. They made a huge leap and it worked for them, and then [it’s] time for them to make another leap.”
John – who first appeared on the show in 2005 and most recently starred in Christmas special Revolution of the Daleks – weighed in on LGBTQ+ representation on ‘Doctor Who’, pointing to his own casting and Pearl Mackie’s character Bill Potts.
He said: “I was the first openly gay actor playing a character like Captain Jack, who we called omnisexual.
“He didn’t care who he slept with really, and he was unapologetic about his sexuality. We have had LGBTQ+ representation on the TARDIS.
“During Peter Capaldi’s reign, we had a character who was a lesbian [Bill Potts, played by Pearl Mackie]. So yeah, we’ve had them, why not have a Doctor the same?”
And while he’s sure his character will return, he isn’t sure whether or not they would have Captain Jack as a potential love interest for an LGBTQ+ Doctor.
He pondered: “If that were to happen, that would be a massive decision. Captain Jack, I think, would just come back – if it does happen – for one off things, because he is a popular character.”
