Lionel Richie was terrified after Michael Jackson’s python escaped during a writing session

OHMYGOSSIP — Lionel Richie was a “nervous wreck” when he was writing ‘We Are the World’ with Michael Jackson because the late icon lost his pet python during the session.
The legendary singer had trouble creating the 1985 charity single with the late ‘Thriller’ hitmaker because Michael’s albino python was let loose in the room, leaving Lionel terrified.
Appearing on ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’, he recalled: “It was one of those things where I’m at Michael’s house, and the obstacle of writing the song was not writing the song; the obstacle of writing the song was he had the albino python that he lost in the bedroom. We’re writing the lyrics, and all of a sudden the albums fall over, ’cause he put his albums against the wall, and I’m lying on the floor and I hear this little sound, ‘Arrr. Arrr.’ And I look over my shoulder and there is this albino python head looking at me.”
Lionel, 71, remembers screaming at the sight of the snake but Michael – who passed away in 2009 – assured the ‘Hello’ hitmaker the snake was being friendly.
He continued: “I was screaming like the last horror movie that you’ve ever seen in your whole life. And he kept saying to me, ‘Lionel, he loves you. He just wants to say he loves you.’”
The pair recorded the song with he supergroup USA for Africa, which included musicians such as Tina Turner, Kenny Rogers, and Diana Ross, who came together to help raise money to provide food and relief aid to starving people in Africa.
And whilst Lionel noted that writing the song with Michael was “glorious”, he couldn’t shake the terror of coming face-to-face with the python.
He added: “So, to make a long story short, right after that, we put the snake away, I’m a nervous wreck, and we write the lyrics to ‘We Are the World’. Writing the song was just glorious, but that was the thing that was happening while we were writing the song.”
