Bill Roache loves being ‘at the centre of the drama’ on Coronation Street

OHMYGOSSIP — Bill Roache loves being “at the centre of the drama” on ‘Coronation Street’.
The 88-year-old actor has portrayed Ken Barlow on the ITV soap since the first-ever episode in 1960, but he doesn’t want to see his character “with his feet up” anytime soon, because he relishes acting out hard-hitting storylines.
He said: “I love being at the centre of the drama, my dysfunctional family are my bread and butter, no one wants to see Ken with his feet up, least of all me.
“I get given great stories and great scenes to play and act.”
The latest big plot affecting the Barlow family has seen Ken’s alcoholic son Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) start drinking again, which has put him at risk of death.
And Bill believes everyone “can identify” in some way with his fictional family. He added: “I am fortunate to be involved with stories that people can identify with, family based stories that are part of the drama of any community.
“Everyone can identify with some part of Ken’s family, if the Peter story doesn’t resonate then they can see something of themselves in Ken’s relationship with Tracy and Steve or his grandchildren.
“This is what the street does best.”
In December – when ‘Corrie’ celebrated its 60th anniversary – Bill admitted the soap has stood the test of time because it is about real people.
He said: “It’s about ordinary people in a little back street fighting the adversity of life.
“The main thing is, the programme has been organic, changing with the times.
“There’s no reason why it shouldn’t go on forever.”
