Hollyoaks fan reveals soap episode stopped him taking his own life

OHMYGOSSIP — A ‘Hollyoaks’ fan has told how an episode of the soap stopped him from taking his own life.
Radio contributor John was struggling during the first national lockdown last year and was all set to end things, but he tuned into what he expected to be his last-ever ‘Oaks’ episode to see the emotional reaction to the suicide of character Kyle Kelly – played by Adam Rickitt – and it “hit home” what he was about to do.
Speaking to ‘Hollyoaks’ star Ashley Taylor Dawson – who plays Darren Osbourne, who, like Kyle, was struggling with depression last year – on BBC Radio 5 Live, he said: “If that storyline wasn’t there, I would not be here. I would be dead.
“That’s the reality of it. You have saved my life.
“You don’t even understand how appreciative I am.
“I wasn’t even going to watch that episode.
“I wasn’t going to watch it because I was just going to end it.
“And I watched it. So something connected together and … I’m shaking, because I can’t believe that this has happened.
“Nancy and Darren distressed and coming together like, ‘It was no mistake. I found him. He’s gone.’
“I was like … it hit home. It hit something. Imagine my mum finding me.
“It was absolutely, incredibly amazing.
“I can’t explain it.”
Ashley added: “For everyone there might be a different avenue for them to open up.
“Sometimes it takes something else just to trigger that impulse and make you see a different route.”
John is now in a better place and is campaigning for better mental health services for people.
He said: “I want to help other people.
“Even though I’m getting emotional about it and I’m getting upset and triggered that’s totally fine. Because I’m here.
“They’re sat here struggling and scared to talk.
“Men don’t like to talk because it makes us look weak. We’re not weak – we’re human.
“I just want to say thank you mate.”
Ashley added: “Thank you. Like you said, if it helps one person.
“You’re that one person right now.”
