Graham Norton ‘glad’ he isn’t facing marriage and children decisions

OHMYGOSSIP — Graham Norton finds it “weird” there is now an “expectation” for gay men to marry and have children.
The 58-year-old presenter is fascinated by the way society’s attitudes towards non-heterosexual groups have changed over the years and claimed he is “glad” he’s past the age of having to consider issues around having a family of his own.
On young gay men discussing having kids, he said: “It’s like, do you know how much that costs? It’s so weird, isn’t it, that there’s now an expectation that we’ll get married and have kids. I’m glad I’m not having to face those decisions.”
The Virgin Radio DJ insisted he has never wanted children of his own.
He said: “No. I mean, when I could have had them. I know older people who do have kids and good luck to them – I couldn’t. And when I was young enough I certainly didn’t want them. They’d be dead!”
And Graham has never “got close” to getting married because the partners he thought he could be with for life didn’t feel the same way.
Asked if he’d ever considered marriage, he said: “Me? No, no. I suppose, in my head, I’ve met people that I thought I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, but they did not share that view.
“You know, I think to get close to being married, two of you need to do it. So, no, I have not got close.”
The talk show host is currently single and admitted he’s got “pickier” about men as he’s got older.
He said: “There’s a weird thing that happens in your life that the older you get the less right you have to be picky, but the pickier you become. And your dating pool becomes smaller and smaller – but that’s because you want it to be.
“When you’re young it’s the opposite – you know you could be picky, but you’re not.
“So I think that’s what probably changed things. And, you know, I prefer to be unhappy alone. That’s the bottom line. And I’m not even unhappy.”
Graham has put dating “on the back burner” due to the coronavirus pandemic but when he is looking for a new partner, he’s happy to use app Tinder.
He added to The Sunday Times magazine: “Back when I did them, they are what they are. I think being me on them is kind of weird. Because you will end up matching with odd people. Or certainly I seemed to, more than my friends …
“I didn’t do Grindr. I just did Tinder. It’s perfectly civilised and nice.
“And, you know, I like a first date, I like meeting people. It’s just that thing of ‘Oh, now I’m on a second date.’ And you knew 10 minutes into the first one that this is never really gonna go anywhere. But that seems a bit brutal.”
