Ashley Tisdale: Running my own company made me depressed

OHMYGOSSIP — Ashley Tisdale suffered “depression” after becoming the CEO of her own company.
The 35-year-old actress launched her Illuminate beauty brand in collaboration with BH Cosmetics in 2016, and took over the whole company herself in 2018 before eventually shutting it down earlier this year.
And now, Ashley has admitted the reason she closed the company was because the pressure of being “a CEO and a single founder” began to impact her mental health.
She explained: “The most challenging thing I ever did and was a dark time, was when I took over my makeup company. It was just a very hard thing … I had been in partnership with a makeup company and it did really well, and so I had a really great idea, and had really good and authentic reasons for why I wanted to take over.
“But I just didn’t really realise how hard it was to be a CEO of a company, and also a single founder. I had to get investments, and that weighed really heavily on me because I’ve never borrowed money, and I’ve never had to, thank god.
“It wasn’t a personal thing, it was obviously for the company and that’s how things work, but it just really weighed heavily on me.”
The ‘High School Musical’ alum said she didn’t understand how hard it was to run her own company, and admitted she should have noticed the “red flags” that indicated her brand was heading for collapse.
She added: “I was going through depression because of the stress of it. What Instagram and social media doesn’t teach you is … you see the successes of everything, but you’re not actually seeing how hard it is to get to that point, and not everything is overnight.
“I also think I wasn’t listening to my intuition. I always listen to my intuition on everything, but for some reason because I thought I didn’t know the business world very well, I thought, ‘Don’t listen to your intuition, it’s not something you know’. And there were just so many red flags.”
Ashley – who is expecting her first child with her husband Christopher French – battled insomnia as well as depression whilst running her company, but finally reached a turning point when she read the self-help book ‘Attacking Anxiety and Depression’ by Lucinda Bassett.
Speaking on the ‘Looking Up’ podcast, she said: “I went through insomnia, I would wake up at 4am crying hysterically because I felt like I’d failed.
“It got to a point where I was like, something has to change, I can’t live my life this way.”
