Kate Mara loved her complex character in A Teacher

OHMYGOSSIP — Kate Mara enjoyed digging into her character’s complicated psychology in ‘A Teacher’.
The 37-year-old actress plays Claire – a teacher who begins an affair with student Eric (Nick Robinson) – in the drama series and she enjoyed the fact that the show exposes “the grey area of consent” as Claire tries to justify her actions.
Kate said: “I like that (the show) exposes the grey area of consent and power dynamics and grooming.
“What I was excited to explore was highlighting the lies that my character Claire told herself in order to justify behaviour that she knew was wrong the entire time.”
The former ‘House of Cards’ star confessed that it was challenging playing a character who abuses her position of power.
Kate said: “Playing someone who is an abuser – who uses her position and her power to manipulate someone – is not something that I would say is an easy thing to do.”
She also explained how the series, created by Hannah Fidell and based on her 2013 film of the same name, was determined to show a “human side” to Claire as she becomes entangled in the affair.
The actress told the New York Post newspaper’s Page Six column: “Although we know her choices are wrong, we wanted to show the human side of her as well.
“For example, everyone can relate to feeling lost at some point in their lives and wanting to be seen. That does not give any sort of justification to her choices at all – but it’s finding those relatable characteristics that’s important.”
Kate, who has an 18-month-old daughter with husband Jamie Bell, praised co-star Nick and the production team for supporting her as they filmed love scenes.
She said: “There’s some very intimate scenes we had to shoot, and I had just had a baby three months before, so it could have felt vulnerable and scary. But it didn’t feel that way at all, because I had incredible support. Nick is awesome. He’s a true professional.”
