Bertie Carvel says welcoming a baby in lockdown was stressful’

OHMYGOSSIP — Bertie Carvel admits welcoming a baby amid the coronavirus lockdown was “stressful”.
The 43-year-old actor rushed home from a film set in Los Angeles earlier this year, just before the lockdown was introduced, and he was relieved to make it in time.
Bertie – who married Sally Scott last year – shared: “I was making a film there and my wife was very pregnant at the time, and had to come back in order to come home in time for the birth.
“I was meant to be getting back just in time and then all of this craziness happened and I was terrified I was going to have to sort of swim back. But luckily, the film shut down on the Friday and the borders closed on the Monday, so I made it back in time.
“We were due to go another two weeks, which would have meant I was stuck there.”
Sally gave birth to their baby boy in May, during the lockdown, and Bertie admits it’s been a “life-changing” experience.
However, he also acknowledged that the circumstances surrounding the birth made it a stressful experience.
The actor told ITV’s ‘This Morning’: “It was amazing. It’s been a life-changing, incredible thing. He’s just a ray of sunshine – in fact, his name is Ernie Sunshine. I’m totally, totally in love.
“But it was stressful, in the lead-up particularly, we were reading stuff about hospitals in New York refusing birth partners access to the birth and worried that something like that might happen here. In the event, we were incredibly lucky and the birth centre were amazing and the midwives were amazing and yeah, we had a really great experience.
“But it’s been strange as well … I mean, amazing to be all locked up together and have this time and this extended paternity leave as it were. But also odd to be cut off from friends and family and support networks, and all the classes that you might go to … it’s been strange.”
