Joanna Lumley reprises Coronation Street role for soap’s birthday message

OHMYGOSSIP — Joanna Lumley reprised her ‘Coronation Street’ role to wish the ITV soap a happy 60th birthday.
The show turns 60 on December 9th, and on Sunday (11.10.20) the soap began counting down 60 days until the programme’s big day, and Joanna recorded a special message as her character Elaine Perkins – who she played for eight episodes in 1973 – from behind the Rovers Return bar.
In the video, which was shared on Corrie’s Twitter account, she said: “I can hardly believe I’m saying this – I’m saying happy birthday to ‘Coronation Street’ for 60 years.
“It’s unbelievable, and what makes it even more unbelievable (is) that I, Elaine Perkins, who was never allowed in the Rovers Return.
“And now behind here, I’m holding up my glass and saying to you all, all the cast and crew then and now: Happy, happy birthday, a thousand congratulations and in my heart I shall always be part of ‘Corrie’.
“Bless you sweethearts, cheers!”
And today (12.10.20), ‘Queer Eye’ star Tan France has wished ‘Corrie’ a happy birthday.
Speaking in a clip, he said: “Happy 60th anniversary, ‘Coronation Street’.
“I couldn’t be happier for you. What an accomplishment.
“The longest running soap opera in the world. That’s incredible. I will always love ‘Coronation Street’.
“I’m sending so much love to the cast and the crew.”
The anniversary week episodes will see the end of Yasmeen Metcalfe’s (Shelley King) trial, which will see if she goes down for attempted murder of her evil, abusive, husband Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew).
‘Coronation Street’ debuted on ITV on December 9th 1960, and the show was the creation of Salford-born writer Tony Warren.
The soap has aired more than 10,000 episodes, and the Guinness World Record-holding programme has seen 57 births, 146 deaths and 131 weddings alongside affairs, murders, and huge secrets.
