Mary Berry ‘overwhelmed’ by birthday honours list

OHMYGOSSIP — Mary Berry is “overwhelmed” to have been made a Dame in the Queen’s birthday honours list.
The former ‘Great British Bake Off’ star has been “lucky enough” to make cookery her passion and her career and can’t wait to celebrate the honour with her family.
Speaking about the honour, she said: “I am absolutely overwhelmed to receive this great honour. For most of my life I have been lucky enough to follow my passion to teach cookery through books and the media. My only achievement at school was just one O-level in cookery … However, I am sure they are looking down and smiling. I will celebrate with my husband and family very soon.”
Meanwhile, Joe Wicks – also known as The Body Coach – was also honoured for being the nation’s PE teacher during lockdown owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
He said: “If you met me as a little boy you’d have thought, ‘He’s not going anywhere, he’s not going to do anything great.’ But I’ve turned it around and I am proud I’ve become this person who’s helping people.”
And ‘Coronation Street’ star Maureen Lipman has also been made a dame for her services to charity, entertainment and the arts.
She said: “I am proud to be honoured by the Queen and country that I love, for doing the work that I love. My grandfather was given the freedom to live and work in the historic and welcoming city of Hull after fleeing persecution in Russia. Two generations later that same city gave me, his granddaughter, a full grant to live and study drama at Lamda in London, which led to a rich and rewarding career, giving and receiving pleasure in my craft and now to this unexpected damehood, whilst happily still treading the cobbles of Corrie. It is a wonderful reflection on what, one trusts, is the continuing generosity of this country to the immigrant. So, gratefully, Happy Birthday your Majesty and thank you.”
