Coronation Street hit with Ofcom complaints over ‘distressing’ dream scenes

OHMYGOSSIP — ‘Coronation Street’ sparked Ofcom complaints this week over Gemma Winter’s horrifying dream sequence.
In a distressing scene aired during Monday’s episode (23.03.20), Dolly Rose Campbell’s character woke up to hear one of her quadruplets Aled crying, and took him downstairs.
She then put the baby in the washing machine, before waking from her nightmare with Aled nowhere to be seen, although he was downstairs with Chesney Brown (Sam Aston)
According to The Sun Online, four people complained to the broadcasting regulator about the content, with others complaining on social media.
On viewer tweeted: “Even though it was a dream on a soap, that washing machine incident was f***ing disgusting on #CoronationStreet Whoever gave the okay to that scene needs to be jailed!”
A different fan wrote: “Did Gemma really just dream she put the baby in the oven? That’s a bit dark even for me #Corrie.”
Another added: “#coronationstreet reallly??? Gemma dreaming she put the baby in the oven?? Not the best or appropriate idea is it.. (sic)”
The scenes come after recent reports that ‘Corrie’ bosses will explore Gemma’ mental health as she deals with bullying at a new baby group.
An insider said: “Gemma joins a new group for support, but it all goes wrong when she clashes with a few b****y women.
“They really shame her and make her question herself – and the behaviour of some of the mums will kick start a new mental health storyline for Gemma and send her on a spiral.
“It’ll be really tough for her – and really relatable for a lot of parents.”
Last year, ‘Corrie’ also received Ofcom complaints during a scene – which aired during Fertility Awareness Week – showing Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) discussing how Gemma Winter had given birth to quadruplets.
She said: “You can’t move for twins and triplets these days. At least she did it the old-fashioned way and not through, what’s it, IVF.”
Some viewers branded it “insensitive”, with another taking aim at the “insensitive scripting”.
