Zsa Zsa Gabor has had stomach surgery. The 94-year-old actress -– who has suffered a string of health problems since falling out of bed in July 2010 – was rushed to hospital on Saturday with a high fever and yesterday was operated on by staff at UCLA Medical Center after a loose feeding tube caused her to start bleeding.
Zsa Zsa’s husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt, said his wife had been given strong antibiotics to control an infection in her stomach and though she is unable to move or speak, he is confident she will recover.
“She’s a big fighter,” he said. “I always feel optimistic, because I know her.”
Doctors are said to have expressed “guarded optimism” about Zsa Zsa’s chances of recovery from the latest setback in her health problems.
In May, Zsa Zsa was rushed to hospital with severe pneumonia symptoms.
She also needed medical attention for high blood pressure after she became inconsolable over the death of her friend Dame Elizabeth Taylor in March.
The frail actress has also struggled with an infection in her left leg, and while doctors advised she should have the limb amputated – just a month after she lost part of her right leg – she refused the operation, leaving her with just a 50/50 chance of surviving for another year.
“Another big operation is a big risk for a woman who is 94 years old with high blood pressure,” Frederic said. “We don’t expect her to get better. She will be in bed for the rest of her life.”
