City News Service (CNS) — The West Hollywood City Council today approved an ordinance that would ban the sale of apparel made of fur in the city — the first ordinance of its kind to be approved in the United Stares.
The unanimous vote came around 1:15 a.m. toward the end of a seven-hour meeting that drew some 200 members of the public to the West Hollywood Park Auditorium. They followed the vote with a standing ovation and enthusiastic applause.
The ordinance must be given a second reading before it can receive final approval. The council will also have to decide on a start date for the ban and whether it should apply to used clothing.
Councilmember John D’Amico, who advocated a ban on fur during his election campaign earlier this year, has proposed June 30 as a start date.
The West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce opposes the ordinance.
