Chantelle Houghton on fertility problems: Alex Reid has been absolutely amazing

Chantelle Houghton has opened up about finding out that she would not be able to fall pregnant. The reality TV star spoke about the “unexpected” news on ITV’s This Morning. Houghton, who is currently dating Alex Reid, dismissed suggestions that extreme dieting had left her with a “very very low chance” of conceiving naturally, DigitalSpy mediates.

Houghton told hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford: “That’s one thing I really wanted to clear up, because that is not the cause. I was born this way; it was either because I was born with a low amount of eggs, or over the years I’ve had an accelerated loss of eggs. Yes, dieting wouldn’t have helped, but that isn’t the cause.”

The 27-year-old said of receiving the news: “To be honest, it was so unexpected because it’s not like I was trying to have children – I went because I was getting some pain in my left ovary.

“I never ever expected to have this told to me. It was devastating and I have over the past six to eight weeks started to come to terms with it a lot more. But it’s awful and you don’t ever get told this. At 25, you’re actually classed – in infertility years – as old, and women don’t get told this. There’s nothing when you’re at school, all there is is how not get pregnant.”

Speaking alongside Houghton, Dr Carol Cooper reassured her that it does not mean “she’ll never have children”.

Praising Reid, Houghton told Holmes and Langsford that she had “wrestled” with the decision to tell him the news over fears that he “might run”.

“But I thought this is the situation and I’m not going to be able to change it, it’s still going to be the same in six months or a year, and it all came tumbling out one night and he’s been absolutely amazing and I couldn’t thank him enough,” she said.

Asked by Langsford if the couple have considered their future with or without children, Houghton said: “Alex is brilliant with kids, he amazing around them and they just stick to him like glue. But we have spoken about it definitely and obviously we have a lot to talk about.”
