Bill Nighy sympathises with young actors

Bill Nighy thinks many young actors struggle to make it into showbusiness. The British star – who is currently promoting his new action comedy ‘Wild Target’ alongside Rupert Grint and Emily Blunt – admits acting is now a tough business to get into because so many now know about what goes on behind the scenes.

He said: “It’s always been hard, really hard – much harder for writers and directors. People know much more about what being an actor is. I didn’t know anyone who was an actor. Now you have lots of programmes about being an actor or what goes on backstage. More people know and so more people are attracted to it, therefore there are larger numbers and it makes it tougher.”

The 60-year-old leading man also admits he is unsure about the future of the British film industry because of the lack of support from successive governments.

He told BBC News: “I know we have everyone we need, we are overburdened with talent and I think successive governments haven’t exactly made it easy for us. I think it should be too a much larger degree subsidised by the government, in the way that the French are. So we don’t have to keep making films that, ‘Save the day’.

“I don’t want to be in films which are designed to make people rich, or tell you how to live your life. It would be great to just make films that expressed us.”

Bill is currently working on movie ‘Chalet Girl’ with Sophia Bush and Ed Westwick, and will next be seen in the first part of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ – due for release on November 19.
