Lady Gaga’s ‘Alejandro’ video represents “desire to take in the holy”

The director of Lady Gaga’s new eight minute long video, Steven Klein has hit back at claims that his mini-movie is disrespectful to religion. The video has been targeted after it showed the ‘Poker Face’ singer swallowing rosary beads whilst dressed as a nun.

The fashion photographer-turned-pop video director explained to MTV that his creation was “not meant to denote anything negative,” and that particular scene “represents the desire to take in the holy.”

He added: “It represents the character’s battle between the dark forces of this world and the spiritual salvation of the soul. Thus at the end of the film, she chooses to be a nun, and the reason her mouth and eyes disappear is because she is withdrawing her senses from the world of evil and going inward towards prayer and contemplation.”

Lady Gaga took to her twitter page earlier this week to blast her critics.

She said: “So many will try to destroy me. So many, over and over, coming in periods of greatness. But in this period, I cannot be broken: GAGAKLEIN (sic)”
