Meet Chana Deutsch – Mom of the Week

Meet Chana Deutsch – Mom of the Week

Chana Deutsch grew up in Toronto, Canada and came to Israel to learn Torah after high school. After a year in seminary, she realized that since Torah really is a perfect manual for life, she needed to spend more time learning before she could use it properly.

Upon returning for the second year, she quickly decided that Israel really was the place she wanted to make her home. It was also at this time that she met a nice guy in the Old City of Jerusalem, realized that there were actually nice religious guys in Israel (who would have thought!) and decided to stay.  Baruch Hashem, two weeks later he asked her out and six months later they were married and living together in Jerusalem. After residing in several other cities throughout the country they are back in Jerusalem, living in the Old City across the way from where they first met.

With three active daughters to keep her busy, Chana spends most of her time either hanging out with them or driving around Jerusalem to their different schools. Each school was selected based on their individual personalities, talents, and needs. In her rare spare time, she teaches Women and Judaism as well as Tanach (Bible Studies) in various institutions for women in Jerusalem, as well as in her own home.

Chana Deutsch
studies Tanach under the tutelage of world-renown teachers and is a practicing kallah (Jewish bride) teacher certified by the Israeli Rabbinate. In her Kallah classes, she discusses and relays the varied and intricate issues of Jewish married life in a one-on-one open and comfortable setting.

Shabbat is a festive, fun, and packed event every week in the Deutsch home. They have a diverse shabbos table with a collection of people – half invited before Shabbat and half picked up on the way home from the Kotel. Singing, sharing, asking questions, and learning together is encouraged at this house. In Chana’s own words, “My husband and I try to share and express the beauty and relevance of Judaism.”
